Camps are for all elementary and middle school children unless stated otherwise. That includes Rising 1st years through MS.

Week 1: June 11th – 15th
Once Upon a Time… (9am – 1pm)
Come explore the elements of creative writing. Learn how writers get ideas, choose the right words and craft the most elegant sentences. Students will learn how to revise and edit compositions — an important skill in truly great writing. We will have a coffee shop style reading on Friday so parents can hear the students’ compositions.

Build Your Own Electronics (Rising 5th years thru MS) (9am – 1pm)
Intro to Electrical Engineering
You don’t have to wait until college to learn about Electrical Engineering! We start with the very
basics — voltage, current, resistance, using a multimeter and breadboard — then work our way up to
building several really cool circuits with a Design Challenge at the end! Students first build an
electronic musical instrument you play without touching! Then change it into a Police Siren. Next,
build an electronic thermometer! Learn one more secret circuit. THEN…the Design Challenge where
you combine several circuits together to design something new! For students who are in Scouts® this
class will cover all 6 requirements needed to obtain your Electronics Merit Badge®. Presented by Techsplorers.

Build a Lawn Mower Engine (Rising 5th years thru MS) (1pm – 4pm)
Intro to Mechanical Engineering
You don’t have to wait until college to learn about Mechanical Engineering! In this class students will
COMPLETELY take apart a lawn mower engine AND put it back together again! Learn how to use
mechanics tools: ratchets, wrenches, torque wrenches, etc. Learn the engineering theory of operation
for the carburetor, magneto, spark plug, piston, rings, valves, compression ratios, displacement, why
octane ratings matter and how it’s designed and manufactured. NO GASOLINE. We don’t run the
engines (no worries mom and dad). For students who are in Scouts® this class will cover all 9
requirements needed to obtain your Engineering Merit Badge®. Presented by Techsplorers.

Miners Chorus Camp (UE & MS Only) (1pm – 4pm)
Calling all singers! Come join the Miners Chorus for one week during the summer and make beautiful music. This experience will involve choosing and learning several popular songs over the week. At the end of the week, the Chorus will go “on tour” to local venues for performances. No prior experience necessary—just a willingness to sing and a love for music. Open to all UE and Middle School students.

Kids Just Want to Have Fun (All Day, 9am – 4pm)
You know the camp, you know the drill. Bring some pocket money, get on the bus and have some FUN! We will travel to places like Chuckie Cheese’s, the movie theater, bowling and King’s Dominion.

Bloom Where You’re Planted (All Day, 9am – 4pm)
From Petal to Pistil, this camp will learn about gardening through hands-on experience. Get ready to get dirty and have some fun in the process. Campers will work on gardening projects in the morning and explore writing, poetry and art through gardening. Each afternoon students will go on a field trip to area gardens and farms.

Week 2: June 18th – 22nd
Tennis (9am – 1pm)
Join Martha Rose for this Tennis instruction camp. Campers will learn basic skills and techniques with an emphasis on the fundamentals. Students will enjoy a lot of playing time. Bring a tennis racket, water bottle and hat.

Swimming Camp (1pm – 4pm)
Swimming and pool games — cross pool, Marco polo, water polo — with an emphasis on building better swimming skills like: diving, basic jumps and stroke techniques. Water fun with a porpoise (I couldn’t resist!)

Be Dramatic (All day, 9am – 4pm)
Students will put on a dramatic production including learning lines & stage direction, creating props, sets and costumes and performing their masterpiece for parents on Friday afternoon.

Outdoor Adventure with Greg Dahlin (2 Week Camp) (All day, 9am – 4pm)
Come along on a dynamic experience that challenges and inspires the adventurer in you. Greg is both an experienced outdoorsman and a trained wilderness first-responder, who shares a passion for connecting young people to the wonders of the natural world.
During this 2-week program, participants will engage in a week of backcountry training and workshops, planning of a trek in our own North Carolina mountains, and experience either a 3 or 4 day trek. The length and details of the trek will be determined based on the experience level and abilities of the group. Because vital skills and planning take place during the preparation week, all participants must attend the first week before heading out on our mountain adventure. Students will learn many skills, including fire starting, wilderness first aid, orienteering and backcountry cooking, and they will experience first-hand the natural wonders of our home state. This program is open to students 10-14 years of age. Space is limited, so please sign up early.

Put a Poem in Your Pocket (9am – 1pm)
Come explore the elements of poetry. Students will listen to poems and examine the elements that poets use. Then students will have opportunities to try their hand at crafting their own original poems in a variety of styles. The week will end with a coffee shop style reading on Friday so that parents can hear the students’ poems.

Are you ready for some serious FUN? This camp will test your brain and your coordination with MSR versions of popular TV game shows like Minute to Win It, Wheel of Fortune, American Idol and Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Will you be the next contestant on… Game Show Extravaganza?

Week 4: July 9th – 13th
Spanish Cuisine (9am – 1pm)
Join Martha for a week of Spanish culture and cuisine. You will plan the menu, shop for ingredients and cook delicious meals to enjoy everyday.

Floorball (1pm – 4pm)
This camp gives players the opportunity to practice and develop their skills through a variety of drills. Each day, participants will have the chance to apply what they have learned in a live scrimmage, which will focus on sportsmanship, teamwork and leadership. All equipment will be provided.

Music and Art Camp (1pm – 4pm)
Come explore different areas of music and art through hands-on projects, including music from the movies, painting, rock ‘n’ roll, tie-dyeing shirts (or anything else!), classical music, origami, and much more!

Students will be able to make their own “all occasion card” collection that will be used all year around. A variety of techniques and materials will be used as well as learning how to use the Cricut machine, giving your cards a professional look.

Woodworking (UE only) (9am – 1pm)
This is an introduction to woodworking with master woodworker Bill Wallace. Learn about proper tool handling and technique. Each student will make a masterpiece of their own.

Songwriting (9am – 1pm)
Campers will learn the basics of songwriting — structure, terminology, inspiration, and techniques for lyrical expression. Campers will craft their own songs and record the song to take home. You are welcome to bring any and all instruments, but there is absolutely no musical ability require.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (9am – 1pm)
Laura will guide this camp through some fabulous crafts, like making a personalized tshirt, friendship bracelets, homemade body scrubs, and jewelery projects just to name a few.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire? (1pm – 4pm)
Learn about economics & money. This is a great class for kids to learn how to handle their money responsibly and how our economy works. There will be an introduction to entrepreneurship and how to start a business.

Scrapbooking (All day, 9am – 4pm)
Here is a chance to get all of your pictures together and put them in your own scrapbook. We will be creating a book of memories to last a lifetime. Bring in your pictures of past vacations, family holidays, even the family pet, and we can create a place to keep them in a personalized book. We will be taking a field trip to Archivers one day to get inspiration, ideas and materials if needed. You are welcome to bring a camera and we’ll make new memories of our week together.

Elementary My Dear Watson – Mystery Camp (9am – 1pm)
From Sherlock Holmes to the FBI, solving mysteries has always been a source of intrigue. Come join us as we solve some mysteries of our own. Hunt for clues and use your logic skills to break the case. We will also read some classic literature along the way, employ some cool gadgetry and have a scavenger hunt!

LEGO Camp (9am – 1pm)
If you love to build and use your imagination, this camp is for you. Campers will learn to build from instructions, build freeform and design their own instructions to teach others. There will be lots of time to build LEGO worlds and explore interactive play.

LE Transition Camp (9am – 1pm)
This camp is great for all RISING 1st YEARS. Give your child the gift of getting acquainted with the Montessori elementary classroom, materials and routine, before starting in the Fall.

Join Coach Dave for some creative fun and lots of sports activities in this ALL NEW camp. Kids will have an opportunity to help shape this camp by using their imaginations.
