Director of Student Life

MSR seeks a full-time Director of Student Life & Activities for the 2019-2020 school year. Under the general direction of the Head of Middle & Upper School as well as to the Head of Lower School, the ideal candidate provides leadership for the delivery of the student life program, which includes ensuring student safety and security and overseeing student activities, student government, and discipline. Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree, have at least three years of experience in student life programming in an independent school setting, and have a willingness to travel with students. The Director of Student Life & Activities is committed to the MSR Mission, understands and appreciates children 18 months through 18 years, cultivates positive relationships with students and parents, has excellent executive functioning skills, takes initiative, and follows through in order to achieve goals, demonstrates superior organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, understands, appreciates, and is sensitive to a diverse clientele. Duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Fosters a positive learning environment through the successful implementation of student activities
  • Assists in designing, implementing, and overseeing student life activities, e.g., Intercessions, Occupations, Studios, clubs, and other social events
  • Plans and organizes curricular trips for all divisions and ensures effective execution 
  • Arranges for and coordinates CPR and first-aid training for faculty and staff
  • In partnership with the student support team and administration, provides mentorship for students and, when directed, investigates issues brought forth by parents 
  • Assists in developing and implementing policies and procedures that will define expectations for student behavior and shape discipline systems  
  • Assists in creating and implementing policies and procedures to ensure high accountability in student attendance
  • Establishes expectations for and oversees student behavior on campus, at off-campus school sponsored events, and in school vehicles 
  • Maintains student activities and trip budgets and works with Business Office to ensure appropriate accounting
  • Establishes and maintains professional rapport and serves as a liaison with outside vendors and contractors, e.g., transportation companies, hotels, venues for class trips, etc. 
  • Assists with annual review and editing of handbooks and manuals that pertain to the student life program
  • Assists in creating annual academic calendar
  • Assists the Head of Lower School and the Head of Middle and Upper School in creating academic schedules
  • Communicates as needed with personnel charged with ensuring campus safety and security
  • Assists in the supervision and implementation of emergency protocols and procedures pertaining to student safety
  • Works with other School members to promote retention
  • Serves as liaison with other schools as needed
  • Partners in developing the advisory programs for Middle and Upper School
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Head of School, the Head of Lower School, and the Head of Middle and Upper School
  • Partners in developing internship opportunities for Upper School students
